How to Judge the Quality of Food-Grade Silicone Baking Paper During Procurement
Quality identification is divided into document verification, simple visual & hand tests, simulated practical tests and counterfeit identification, suitable for sampling inspection for commercial grilled fish paper.
- Step 1: Verify Qualification Documents (Mandatory First Check)
Qualified food-contact silicone paper must provide the following documents from suppliers:
Printing on outer packaging
Mandatory marking: For Food Contact, together with applicable temperature and manufacturer information.
Bare rolls without any printed text are high-risk items; do not purchase.
Test reports
Request test reports complying with GB 4806.8-2016 Paper and paperboard materials and articles for food contact.
Key testing items: silicone migration, fluorescent substances, heavy metals.
⚠️ Reminder: Verify enterprise name and production date on reports to prevent forged or copied reports from other manufacturers.
❌ Critical distinction: Industrial release paper has no such food-grade testing standards and must not touch food ingredients. - On-site Visual & Manual Sampling Inspection (Goods Receiving Check)
Odor test (simplest and effective)
Premium food-grade paper: Nearly odorless; no sour, chemical or kerosene smell after rubbing or heating.
Inferior paper: Strong chemical odor that worsens under high temperature, indicating incompletely cured silicone with migration risks.
Paper whiteness check
Avoid extremely dazzling bright white paper.
Qualified food-grade silicone paper presents natural off-white / cream white. Paper with unnatural bright white likely contains fluorescent whitening agents.
Simple fluorescent inspection: Shine UV banknote detector in dark environment; reject paper with strong blue fluorescent reaction.
Wiping test – Check silicone shedding (extremely important!)
Rub the paper surface repeatedly with dry tissue:
Qualified product: No white powder or oil stain on tissue.
Inferior product: White powder or oil film transfers; silicone will stick on fish meat during grilling.
Distinguish single-sided / double-sided silicone coating
Water drop test on both sides:
Double-sided silicone paper: Water beads form on both sides without penetration. Ideal for grilled fish with plenty of soup and grease.
Single-sided silicone paper: Water repellent only on silicone side; reverse side leaks oil and water, not recommended for long-term grilled fish application. - Simulated Practical Test (Specially for Grilled Fish Business)
Test 1: High Temperature Resistance Test
Bake silicone paper in oven at 200–220℃ for 10 minutes
✅ Pass standard: Slight yellowing, no heavy smoke or irritant odor.
❌ Defective: Heavy smoke, pungent smell, paper quickly becomes brittle and breaks.
Test 2: Oil resistance & soup soaking resistance test
Pour hot oil and soup on a plate, lay silicone paper and soak for 30 minutes:
No oil or water seepage on the back side.
Paper will not soften or rupture.
35g thin paper tends to break easily after soaking; 45–60g double-sided silicone paper is preferred for grilled fish.
Test 3: Non-stick test
Spread sauce on paper, bake at high temperature and cool down; sauce should not stick firmly when peeled off.
Inferior paper strongly adheres to sauce after heating. - Common Misconceptions & Counterfeit Identification
Misconception: All silicone paper is food-grade.
Many industrial release paper looks identical to food-grade baking paper. Vendors sell them at low prices with cheap silicone raw materials unsuitable for food contact.
Misconception: Higher grammage equals better quality.
Grammage only reflects thickness, not food safety. Thick paper can also use inferior silicone coating.
Identify low-quality paper made from recycled pulp
Tear the paper edge: Inferior paper has messy fibers and many black impurities. Premium virgin pulp paper has uniform fiber texture. - Quality Requirement Template to Send Directly to Suppliers
Requirement: Food-grade double-sided silicone baking paper, compliant with GB4806.8-2016; free of fluorescent agents and silicone shedding; heat resistance ≥230℃; no peculiar odor when baked at 220℃; soup-resistant, oil-proof and water-proof. Corresponding batch inspection reports to be provided. No mixed delivery of industrial release paper.

Check package marking → Smell test → UV light fluorescent inspection → Dry wipe silicone shedding test → Water drop test to confirm single/double-sided coating → High temperature baking test → Soup soaking penetration test.
